October to March is the best time for this tour. The weather is cool and pleasant across all six cities and Rajasthan in winter is at its best. Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur looks spectacular in clear winter light, Lake Pichola in Udaipur is full after the monsoon and the drive through the Aravalli hills between Jodhpur and Udaipur is beautiful in the cool season.
November is a particularly good month. The Pushkar Camel Fair usually falls in November, which is one of the most extraordinary events in India. If your dates align with it, the whole experience of Pushkar changes completely.
January and February are peak months for Udaipur and Jodhpur. Both cities are at their most photogenic and the rooftop views over the blue city of Jodhpur and the lake palaces of Udaipur are best enjoyed in clear winter air.
March to May is warmer but entirely doable. Rajasthan in summer is hot but the monuments, forts and palaces are all fully accessible and less crowded than in winter. Udaipur and Jodhpur both have excellent accommodation and the heat is manageable with air-conditioned transfers.
July to September is the monsoon season. The drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur through Ranakpur is longer in rain but the Ranakpur temple is extraordinarily peaceful in the quiet monsoon season. Fewer visitors and greener surroundings are the trade-off for slower roads.
Delhi, Capital of India
Delhi is where this tour begins and where India's scale and energy hit you immediately. Old Delhi and New Delhi sit side by side but feel centuries apart. Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and the spice market give you a vivid picture of the Mughal era. New Delhi shifts the mood with India Gate, Humayun Tomb, Qutub Minar and the wide boulevards of the British period.
Agra, Home of the Taj Mahal
Agra holds the Taj Mahal at sunrise, which remains one of the most remarkable things you can see anywhere on earth. The white marble changes color through the morning and no photograph captures the experience. Agra Fort tells the story of the Mughal empire from inside its red sandstone walls. The Baby Taj across the river is quieter and more intimate and often the more moving of the two.
Jaipur, The Pink City of Rajasthan
Jaipur is where Rajasthan announces itself. Amber Fort on its ridge above the city is one of the finest fort-palace complexes in India. Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar together give you a full picture of Rajput ambition and refinement. The bazaars of Jaipur sell gemstones, block printed textiles, blue pottery and silver jewelry that the city has produced for centuries.
Pushkar, The Sacred Lake Town
Pushkar is one of the oldest towns in India and one of only a handful of places in the world with a temple dedicated to the god Brahma. The sacred lake at its center is surrounded by 52 ghats and hundreds of temples. It is a small town but it carries an enormous spiritual weight. The atmosphere here is unlike anything else on this route and even a half day in Pushkar changes the tone of the whole journey.
Jodhpur, The Blue City
Jodhpur is one of the most visually dramatic cities in Rajasthan. Mehrangarh Fort rises 122 metres above the city on a sheer rock face and its size and condition make it arguably the finest fort in all of Rajasthan. From its ramparts you look down over the old city, which is painted in shades of blue, a tradition started to mark the homes of Brahmin families. Umaid Bhawan Palace, still partly occupied by the Jodhpur royal family, is one of the last great palaces built in India and part of it now operates as a luxury hotel. Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial beside the fort, is one of those quiet places that stays with you.
Udaipur, The City of Lakes
Udaipur is the most visually distinctive city on this tour. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II on the banks of Lake Pichola, it has been called the most romantic city in India for over two centuries. The City Palace rises directly from the lake's edge. The boat ride on Lake Pichola takes you past Jag Mandir Palace on its island and gives you the view of Taj Lake Palace floating on the water. The drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur passes through Ranakpur, where a 15th-century Jain temple built entirely in white marble stands in a forested valley that feels completely removed from the world outside.
This tour covers six cities across North India and Rajasthan and ten days gives you the right amount of time in each. The Golden Triangle alone takes four days done well. Adding Pushkar, Jodhpur and Udaipur extends the journey into deep Rajasthan and the drive through Ranakpur on the way to Udaipur is one of the great overland routes in India. You come away having seen Mughal India, Rajput India and the lake culture of Mewar in one connected journey.
If you want a shorter version, the Golden Triangle Tour with Udaipur 8 Days covers Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur without Pushkar and Jodhpur. The 3 Days Golden Triangle Tour covers the core Delhi, Agra and Jaipur highlights. The 5 Days Golden Triangle Tour gives more time across the same three cities. For a wildlife experience, the Golden Triangle Tour with Ranthambore 7 Days adds a tiger safari. For a spiritual extension, the Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi 8 Days adds the Ganges and ancient Varanasi.
